A few months ago, I visited a nearby pet shop with my brother. The shop had various breeds of pets on display for purchase. While I have always loved dogs since childhood, I was never interested in cats. But that day, something strange happened. While I was playing with the puppies, there was a Persian cat in the shop that I initially didn’t pay much attention to.
After spending some time with the puppies, I eventually approached the Persian cat. From the moment I saw it, I was somehow magnetically drawn towards it. I looked deep into the cats eyes, while I started experiencing a strange connection that I had never experienced before in my life.
I went home feeling odd. A couple of days later I had the strangest dream, that I ever had before. Yes, in that dream I was a cat myself. I have a beautiful tail and whiskers and I am roaming in an open farmland which almost felt like my real home. Suddenly I woke up and was puzzled by the vividness of the dream.
I wondered why I had such a dream. While cat dreams are common for many people, dreaming of myself as a cat, having a tail, claws, etc felt particularly strange and puzzling.
I don’t know whether it’s because of the cat memes trend or some signal from the universe, but soon after this experience I strangely noticed an unusual number of cat-related posts on my Instagram feed. While I was never ever interested in cats right from my childhood, I slowly found myself increasingly drawn to pictures and videos of them.
At first, I dismissed these thoughts as mere coincidences or the result of my overthinking. However, the persistent occurrence of these events made me question if there might be more to it, perhaps even a signal from the universe.
One day, while I was deeply immersed in my work, sitting in front of my laptop and editing some documents, something very unexpected happened. All of a sudden and absolutely out of the blue I started meowing. Yes, a big “meowwwww” sound came out of my mouth with no relevant context or reason. This made me feel very strange and even slightly shocked. As days passed by, I started making the “meoww” sound more and more often. Although I never made this sound in front of my friends, they began telling me that I had exhibited cat-like behavior since childhood.
And at this point, I decided to investigate this strange phenomenon further.
Upon research, I was initially convinced that a cat might simply be my spirit animal. However, that doesn’t justify why I felt like a cat myself. So I decided to dig deeper. After countless hours of observing and researching, I finally came across the term “Therian”.
Yes, there are several people like you, me, and many others out there who somehow identify themselves as non-human distinctive animals. They are called therians. Therians identify themselves with a particular animal at a soul level and tend to believe that their true self is not human but an animal they identify with.
The bigger question then became, How to find your theriotype? Well, if you don’t know what a theriotype is, it is the animal with which a therian associates and identifies with.
How To Find Your Theriotype?

While some people simply instinctively know their theriotype, others need to explore themselves more deeply in order to know their soul’s true theriotype. So what is your theriotype? Don’t worry, today, let us explore the complete process one can follow in order to find or discover one’s theriotype.
Step 1: Begin with Journaling your thoughts and Actions:
Maintaining a therian journal is the first step toward finding your theriotype. Well, This practice involves recording your instinctive emotions and behaviors that reflect your inner animal soul.
You must include everything that is unusual. Are you imagining a particular animal? write about it. Are you having dreams about a specific animal? Note those down too. Did you see an animal unexpectedly? Describe the experience in detail. Are you experiencing random phantom shifts? Record those as well.
Make sure to write about everything that makes you feel like a therian. This must also include your instinctive animal behaviors or thoughts that make you think you are a therian. By consistently recording these distinctive patterns, you’ll gather a wealth of evidence that your inner therian is silently revealing itself.
Step 2: Identify Relevant Animal Species That Align with You
Now that you have a therian journal filled with your recorded animal behaviors, thoughts, patterns, and emotions from the past few days, it’s time to move to the next step: identifying your potential theriotype’s species.
Start by analyzing your journal entries to derive insights about your inner animal. Focus on the following aspects:
- Habitats: Firstly, the habitats. Identify the most common habitats you experienced in your dreams, thoughts, or shifts. List all these habitats.
- Behaviors: Note the various animal behaviors you recorded. List all the instinctive behaviors you’ve exhibited over the past many days.
- Tendencies: Summarize your most common tendencies. Are you more of a prey or a predator? Do you prefer water, air, or land? Do you favor cold temperatures or warm temperatures in your thoughts? Which animals did you feel a connection with? etc.
Once you summarized these findings based on your therian journal, use them to explore the theriotype’s species you might belong to.
In general, there are only a few broad species like reptiles, felines, carnivores, scavengers, rodents, etc. Now keep your summarized findings from your therian journal infront of you and ask yourself that which species your behaviors and tendencies align with most closely.
So based on all the behaviors you displayed, classify yourself in one (or maybe two) species that could possibly be your theriotype’s species. Of course, this may require extensive research on various animal species and their behaviors, but this effort will help you accurately discover your theriotype.
Now once you are sure that your behaviors, instincts, thoughts and dreams align with a particular animal species, it’s time to move on to the next step.
Step 3: Meditate Deeply to Discover Your Theriotype
In this crucial step, you allow your inner self to reveal your theriotype. Well, who knows your theriotype better than your subconscious mind?
1. Find a Calm Place:
Sit in a quiet, peaceful location. Take deep breaths and keep an open mind.
2. Close Your Eyes and Let Your Thoughts Flow:
As you relax, let your imagination take over. Focus on what you see, hear, and feel in this meditative imagination realm. Now tell me Where do you find yourself? In a forest? Near a waterfall? In the deep ocean? Well, these visions might hint at your therian habitat, perhaps a place that feels like home. In fact, you could feel that you found a place you had lost.
3. Observe Your Imaginative Self:
Now slowly notice and make out your body characteristics like paws, fur, ears, before you come face to face with an animal that could feel right. At times you may come across several random animals, but when your true theriotype appears, it should feel like you’re looking at yourself. This connection signifies your theriotype. Well, in fact, that’s your theriotype.
Now some therians will naturally identify their theriotype during this stage of meditation. However, if you still aren’t sure of your theriotype, then try to push the meditation a little further.
4. Visualize Transformation:
Based on your theriotype’s species you identified in the previous step, imagine yourself transforming into various animals within the species you identified. For example, let us assume you concluded that your theriotype belongs to the scavengers species in the previous step. Now scavengers include a list of land animals like hyenas, bears, wolves, vultures along with water scavengers like crabs, lobsters etc. Now first imagine yourself transforming into a bear roaming in the forest. Does it feel right? Then assume yourself as a wolf therian on a mountain howling in the dark night? Does this feel like your true self? Well, one after the other, repeat this with all the animals in the species you identified with. Do this practice multiple times, until you identify the animal that resonates with your soul. This thorough exploration will help discover your theriotype that you truly identify yourself with.
Here you need to remember one thing. Your brain can visualize anything, including your favorite animals or spirit animals or the one that is simply in your thoughts. So the animal that appeared during your meditation may not always be your true theriotype. That is why you need to cross-check further by looking out for more clues.
Step 4: Lookout for other clues
While you identified your probable theriotype through meditation, it’s time to re-confirm it using other clues and signs.
Firstly consider your therian shifts. Check if your phantom shifts align with the theriotype identified during meditation. For example, if you identified your theriotype as a wolf, observe whether your shifts correspond with typical wolf behaviors.
Next, consider your theriotype’s habitat. For example, if you identified yourself as a shark theriotype, just visit the ocean in real and see how it feels. Does it feel like your true home? Does it feel like you actually belong there? If yes, then the shark theriotype you identified during your meditation could be probably true.
Similarly, consider your animal instincts. For example, if you identified yourself as a dog theriotype, notice if your senses of smell and hearing are heightened. These increased senses indeed could be an indication of your inner dog theriotype.
Thus by cross-checking your meditative insights with these additional observations, you can more accurately confirm your true theriotype.
Step 5: Rediscover Your Theriotype from Time to time
Well lastly, after identifying various clues and signals, you might think that you have accurately identified your theriotype. But let me tell you, you may still be wrong. Yes, I have heard many people who have discovered their theriotype only to realize later that it was incorrect. You may feel certain about your theriotype today, but days later, you might notice traits that don’t align with your initial identification, leading you to discover a new theriotype altogether.
Discovering our true theriotype requires a lot of deep research and self-understanding. Practicing these 5 steps will help you in the journey to discover your theriotype. However, if you find you were wrong the first time, remain open to rediscovering your true theriotype based on your evolving behaviors, traits, and experiences.
